This article is about the European spatial data infrastructure (SDI), which we call, formally, Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe, or INSPIRE. The article describes the key features of INSPIRE, the participative process put in place to develop it, and the key challenges we are facing in implementing it. The article concludes with an overview of the next generation spatial data infrastructures, and the research issues we need to address to get there.
